CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Corporate Social Responsibility

OPUS has implemented a Social and Environmental Management System (SEMS) to establish our commitment to ensuring our business practices are complex to social and environmental impacts. The system covers two main areas:

  • Environmental Protection
  • Corporate Responsibility

OPUS commits to provide a framework that enables our business to manage our social and environmental impacts in a broad, efficient, organised, examined and accepted manner. It includes the organisation, planned development, implementation and maintenance of the company’s policy for environmental protection.

Our SEMS serves as a tool to:

  • Improve environmental performance
  • Ensure compliance to all applicable laws, regulations and codes of conduct
  • Provide a systematic way of managing our environmental affairs
  • Provide an order to address social and environmental concerns through the assignment of responsibility and ongoing evaluation of the company’s practices, procedures, and processes
  • Provide a process for the continual improvement of the system

Environmental Protection

Earth Day is observed in OPUS. Besides observance of the day annually, OPUS has other practices observed on a regular basis.

  • Every last Friday of the month, all lights, computers, fax and copier machines are turned off/shut down for an hour during lunch time (from 12 noon to 1 p.m.).  This will help to conserve energy and reduce our utility bills.
  • Mobile staff are encouraged to work from home on the last Friday of every month. Cutting down on commuting helps to reduce gas emissions which will in turn have a positive impact our carbon footprint.
  • We have changed all the lights in the office from the normal lights to LED lights.
  • IT Department Initiatives for Eco-Friendly Practices:
    • Set printer setting to duplex printing as a default
    • Lengthen asset lifespan – asset refresh is done every 5 years
    • Purchase more energy saving equipment
    • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment (regular servicing) to cut down operational cost
    • Use recyclable batteries
    • Reduce ‘standby power’ (unplugging devices when not in use)
    • Reuse printer ink cartridges
  • We have encouraged OPUS staff to:
    • Reduce duplicate printing (share documents between departments.)
    • Set air conditioning to optimal temperature
    • Have Recycling Bins in the office for Paper and Plastic/Cans
    • Have more potted plants in office
    • Ensure all electrical appliances are switched off when leaving the office for the day
    • Use stairs instead of elevator
    • Consider not smoking
    • Be Vegan for a day
    • Car pool when possible, especially when heading to the same venue for meetings, etc.
    • Reduce use of plastic bags and bring their own recyclable bag
    • Cut down on use of Styrofoam cups in the pantry and use own cups/mugs
    • Encourage usage of refillable white board markers, made of recycled material
